The History

Chianti Classico is the historical and original heart of the Chianti denomination, the area where it all began. In 1716, Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici officially delineated the boundaries of this area, making it one of the first controlled designation of origin regions in the world. The symbol of the Black Rooster, which distinguishes every bottle of Chianti Classico, dates back to the medieval legend of the challenge between Florence and Siena to define their territorial borders.

The DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita - Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin) status, obtained in 1984, represents the highest Italian quality recognition. Chianti Classico DOCG must be produced with at least 80% Sangiovese, the king grape of Tuscany, and adhere to strict production regulations that guarantee authenticity and quality.

Production Area

Chianti Classico DOCG, the historical heart of Tuscan winemaking. The vineyards extend over the hills between Florence and Siena, in the municipalities of Greve, Castellina, Radda, Gaiole, Castelnuovo Berardenga, San Casciano, and Barberino Tavarnelle, at an altitude ranging from 250 to 600 meters above sea level.

The terroir is characterized by galestro (clayey schist) and alberese (compact limestone) soils, which are poor and well-drained, forcing the vines to root deeply and produce concentrated, high-quality grapes. The climate is temperate, with warm but ventilated summers and cold winters. The temperature variations between day and night favor the development of complex aromas, preserve natural acidity, and ensure optimal phenolic ripening.

This hilly landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014, is a mosaic of vineyards, olive groves, forests, and medieval villages that represents the essence of Tuscany.
