Garganega: The Noble Grape of Veneto
Discover Fugolo Gianluca 2023's Bianco Garganello IGT, a white wine that celebrates Garganega, a native Venetian grape of great nobility and tradition. Fresh, elegant, and mineral, this white wine represents the pure expression of a grape that made Soave famous worldwide, and here it finds a new, modern, and territorial interpretation.
The History
Garganega is one of Veneto's oldest and most noble white grape varieties, cultivated for centuries in the provinces of Verona and Vicenza. Its name likely derives from the dialectal term "garganega," referring to a bird's throat, due to the elongated shape of its berries. This grape is the absolute protagonist of Soave, one of the most renowned Italian white wines globally, but it also finds excellent expressions in other areas of Veneto.
Garganega is a versatile grape with great personality: it produces fresh and mineral wines when vinified in steel, but it can also yield complex and long-lived whites when aged in wood or produced with dried grapes (as in Recioto di Soave). Its main characteristics are aromatic elegance, savory freshness, and that distinctive bitter almond note on the finish that makes it unmistakable.
Gianluca Fugolo, an innovative producer from the Verona area, has chosen to vinify Garganega as a single varietal, creating a white wine that expresses the grape's varietal character with freshness and immediacy. The name "Garganello" is a playful homage to the grape, evoking both tradition and the modernity of the production approach.
This Bianco Garganello IGT 2023 stands out for its fresh and floral aromatic profile: notes of white flowers (acacia, hawthorn), white-fleshed fruit (pear, Golden apple, white peach), citrus (lemon, grapefruit), and a touch of aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is fresh, savory, and mineral, with a pleasant acidity that provides vibrancy and persistence, and that characteristic almond finish typical of Garganega. A wine of great drinkability and elegance.
Production Area
Veneto IGT, province of Verona. The vineyards extend over the Veronese hills, in an area suited to Garganega cultivation, at an altitude between 100 and 400 meters above sea level. The climate is temperate, with beneficial influences from Lake Garda and the pre-alpine foothills that create ideal temperature excursions to preserve acidity and develop complex aromas.
The soils are predominantly volcanic and calcareous, rich in minerals, which impart that characteristic mineral savoriness and freshness to the wines that distinguishes quality Venetian whites. In these soils, Garganega finds ideal conditions to express elegance, finesse, and that almond note that makes it unique.
Vinification takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperatures to preserve the primary aromas of the grape and its freshness. No wood aging, to maintain the clean, fresh, and varietal character of Garganega. The result is a modern, elegant, and highly drinkable white wine.
