Barbera d'Alba: The Heartfelt Wine of the Langhe
Discover Bosco Pierangelo's 2020 Barbera d'Alba DOC, a red wine that embodies the convivial and generous spirit of Piedmont. Fresh, fruity, and highly drinkable, Barbera is the everyday wine of the Langhe, the one that accompanies family lunches and dinners with friends. A grape variety that expresses the authentic character of the territory with immediacy and pleasantness, without sacrificing elegance and complexity.
The Story
Barbera is the most widespread red grape variety in Piedmont and among the most cultivated in Italy. Its name likely derives from the Latin term "vitis barberae" or from the city of Barbera in Monferrato, with documented roots as early as the 13th century. Always a wine for daily life and Piedmontese conviviality, in 1970 it obtained the DOC denomination in the "d'Alba" version, which represents its most refined expression. Cultivated on the same hills as Barolo and Barbaresco, it benefits from marly-calcareous soils and an ideal microclimate that give it elegance and complexity.
The distinctive feature of Barbera is its lively natural acidity, which makes it fresh, drinkable, and perfect for accompanying rich Piedmontese cuisine. It is a wine that never tires, enjoyable from the first to the last glass.
Bosco Pierangelo's Barbera d'Alba DOC 2020 comes from well-exposed vineyards, with controlled yields and a short aging in wood. It offers a fruity and spicy aromatic profile, with notes of cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, vanilla, cinnamon, and black pepper. On the palate, it is fresh, savory, with soft tannins and a clean, persistent finish, expressing the best that this grape variety can offer in the Langhe.
Production Area
Barbera d'Alba DOC, Langhe, Cuneo province, Piedmont. The vineyards extend over the hills of Alba, in the same suitable areas that produce Barolo and Barbaresco, at an altitude between 200 and 450 meters above sea level. This territory, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014, represents the excellence of Piedmontese viticulture.
The soils are predominantly marly-calcareous (the famous "marls of Sant'Agata"), rich in minerals, which give the wines elegance, minerality, and that characteristic savory freshness. The climate is continental, with warm but ventilated summers, cold winters, and strong temperature fluctuations between day and night that favor the development of complex aromas and preserve the natural acidity of Barbera.
Vinification involves maceration on the skins to extract color and aromas, followed by a short aging in oak barrels (6-12 months) which gives complexity and roundness without overpowering the fruity character of the grape. The result is a modern, elegant, and highly drinkable Barbera.
